A Serpent in Paradise
OOC: Based in the text of Paradise Lost which suggests Lucifer may have entered the Garden of Eden more than once.
For
nexus_crossings June Prompt: An unexpected afternoon visit.
Lucifer had made a game of sneaking passed the angels that guarded Eden. They believed, like their creator, that walls and guards would be enough. The angels were fools. Michael and Raphael, the most powerful of the guardians, were his favorite targets and they were arrogant and proud. Lucifer wore his pride like a war trophy but these two pretended to be free of its touch. In his first attempt, Raphael had caught him at the wall. From that point on they had become lax, believing that any further attempts by the rebel to enter Eden would be seen as well. In truth, their adversary simply became wiser and more prudent.
This marked the fourth time he had deceived the watch to make his way into paradise. He had many motives, some destructive, others arrogant, and one in direct opposition of the Almighty, though for Lucifer's part it had only been a secondary thought.
He alighted near the shaded stream that trickled through the forest of Eden. There was a beauty to this place that Lucifer sorely missed while bound in the darkness of Chaos. Here was creation again and it set fire to the parts that God had tried to crush. He had hoped that the fires and darkness to which Lucifer had been chained would burn away the angel, make him placid and easier to control. It had done nothing but fuel the wrath and indestructible will.
But here, in the light of Paradise, all darkness abated except for the despair of eventual return to his kingdom and darkness. He gazed around the forested vale, basking in the dappled sunlight he was so long denied. He stood unclothed as if still bound to the Heaven lost though shame had come to the angels with his transgression. Here, no impurity stood and even the marks upon the rebellious fell away to a new grace.
Still something more pure approached, an innocence yet to be touched by any ill. Even Lucifer refrained from marring its perfection despite the knowledge that it was no less than God deserved for his transgressions. A child damned in exchange for a child lost.
“Lucifer.” The voice held the joy of life, pure as the voice of creation itself.
The angel turned to look upon the woman racing, child-like, toward him. She was beautiful in perfection, the first and only of her kind. Lucifer knew the loneliness and happiness that could be found in being one of a kind. That empathy brought the two close and into an embrace of such unrestrained bliss.
“You glow with such beauty.” She laid against him and he delighted in her purity. “Tell me of the names Adam has given since last we parted.”
A light kiss placed upon his chest in innocent love. He returned the gesture to her forehead as she took his hand to lead him through Paradise. Lucifer boiled with wrath and devotion. His hatred of God and his affection for Eve in constant battle within though that war subdued under the bowers of Paradise.
He listened to her with utmost contentment, learning the names of creation that he should have been the hands to work, if not for God's injustice. After a walk through the shaded glen they lay upon their stomachs outstretched in the softest grass and ate of the delicious fruits that hung golden from the trees.
Lucifer pitied Eve and reviled Adam. Once an angel had lived made from his body and he could not bear to be parted from its side. Yet, here, Eve was often alone while the man from which she was created seemed abhorrently disinterested in her existence. To the Fallen Angel, Adam committed a crime against Creation itself by ignoring that which was most part of him. He spoke to God more than that which was born and shaped of his own flesh.
A gentle touch roused him from his dark thoughts. “Why do none of the other angels visit us, except to bring messages from Him?”
The question was innocent and Lucifer sought an honest answer as he gazed into her dark eyes. “I was never a messenger of God. I am a creator, as God himself is a creator. The beauty to be found here is joyous for me.”
She leaned her head on his shoulder beneath his wing. “Your light adds to the beauty of these forests.”
He doesn't know how to react to those words at first; flattered, angry, despairing, loved. It caused turmoil. “Your Grace makes this place more exquisite than the halls of Heaven itself.”
Musical laughter filled the air as she hid against his shoulder, long hair falling to cover her face. “You should not say such things.”
“I have seen Heaven and I have seen Paradise.” Lucifer gazed at Eve while she brushed her long hair from her face. “I would rather be here in Paradise than among the Golden Gates of Heaven's Glory.”
She said no more but laid against his shoulder in quiet repose. Lucifer mused that simply being here would make God irate, though as of yet the Almighty was unaware. He could keep his presence hidden when it suited him. However, the darker part of Lucifer demanded destruction of this place to levy retribution for the Fall. The number of days he had to recline in rested peace were limited. Better to destroy this place and its serenity than allow God to keep it.
